Egyptian Sign Language (LIM, Lughat al-Ishāra al-Masriyaa) is a term I use to refer to the urban sign language varieties I have learned a bit of and observed in use in Cairo and Alexandria. The language fits well within some of the typological patterns described by Zeshan et al. (2013), with some perhaps unique differences. Data is drawn from interviews with signers and resources produced by four different organizations, two in Cairo and two in Alexandria, which exemplify significant variation in this domain. Here I give a general outline of the numeral system including some of its interesting morphological and lexicalization patterns, and note effects of language contact where it occurs (or does not) on word order. Egyptian Sign Language basically refers to any sign language variety in Egypt. The one's I'm familiar with are (some) of the urban varieties of Cairo and Alexandria. Lots of regional lexical variation is apparent in the few dictionary resources I'm aware. The language is basically undocumented, and it's not clear how many varieties (related or unrelated) exist. Varieties in Saudi Arabic, Yemen, the Arab Gulf, the Levant, Khartoum (Sudan), and Libya appear to be related, or at least share a lot of their lexicon. There are multiple systems in use in deaf education in Egypt.

Since I'm traveling to Spain in about a week for work, I've been trying to learn Catalan on Duolingo to prepare. Since I've already studied French, Spanish, and Portuguese I thought it wouldn't be too difficult to pick up the basics quickly, but a few things have surprised me. حيث أني سأسافر إلى اسبانيا بعد أسبوع بسبب عملي فأحاول تعلم اللغة الكاتالونية على دوولينجو استعدادا للسفر. كنت أظنه سيكون سهل حيث أنني قد درست الفرنسية والأسبانية والبرتغالية لكنه يوجد بعض الأشياء التي فاجئتني.  Although for the most part the vocabulary is all easy to connect to a Spanish of French cognate, and even some sentences sound exactly like their Castellano equivalents; I'm finding some of the peculiarities of the object pronouns and verb tenses a bit strange. مع أن معظم المفردات لها مقابل أسباني أو فرنسي بديهي وحتى بعض الجمل مثل المقابل الأسباني تماما فأستغرب بعض ميزات نظام الأفعال والضمائر المفعول.
